John's Commendation of Gaius and Rebuke of Diotrephes

3 John 1:1-15

1
Chapter 1
1 The elder to the beloved Gaius, whom I love in truth. 2 Beloved, I pray that you prosper and be healthy in all things, just as your soul prospers. 3 For I rejoiced greatly when brothers came and testified to your truth—that is, how you walk in truth. 4 I have no greater joy than this: that I hear my children walking in the truth. 5 Beloved, you do faithfully whatever you work for the brothers—and this for strangers. 6 who testified to your love before the church. You will do well to send them forward worthily of God. 7 For they went out for the sake of the Name, taking nothing from the Gentiles. 8 Therefore we ought to support such ones, so that we might become fellow workers with the truth. 9 I wrote something to the church, but Diotrephes, the one who loves to be first among them, does not receive us. 10 Therefore, if I come, I will remind them of his works which he does, babbling against us with evil words. And not being content with these things, he neither receives the brothers himself nor does he receive the ones wishing to do so; he hinders them and casts them out from the church. 11 Beloved, do not imitate evil but imitate the good. The one who does good is from God; the one who does evil has not seen God. 12 Demetrius has a good testimony from everyone, and from the truth itself. We also testify for him, and you know that our testimony is true. 13 I had many things to write to you, but I do not wish to write to you through ink and reed. 14 But I hope to see you soon, and we will speak face to face. 15 Peace to you. The friends greet you. Greet the friends by name.
